Located above the region of Central Greece is the delightful prefecture of Thessaly ( Thessalia ). This region of Greece, which borderd with the Aegean Sea on the east is a truly unique and inspiring region, and one that offers a huge range of landscape, natural beauty and perfect destinations for holidays throughout the year.


Larissa prefecture

 

Larissa, a region of unique natural beauty, pulses with wooded mountains, has a large fertile plain that is crossed by river Pinios, and has various extended beaches as well. The prefecture of Larissa is an ideal destination for those who enjoy touring all year round.

The prefecture of Larissa belongs to the geographical district of Thessalia - it is the largest one - and borders with Pieria and Kozani in the north, Grevena, Trikala and Karditsa in the west, Fthiotida and Magnissia in the south and the Aegean Sea in the east. It has approximately 270.600 inhabitants.

The town of Larissa, which is the capital of the prefecture, is outspread on the infinite plain, which crossed by the river Pinios. Larissa is a modern, cosmopolitan, town with interesting sightseeing. The acropolis, the ancient theaters, the monument - museum of Hippokrates, the park of Alcazar, the traditional houses at Tabakika and at the fortress, the archaeological museum, the picture gallery and the cultural - historical museum, are definitely worth seeing.

Wondering around the prefecture of Larissa you will visit many beautiful and interesting settlements. The hamlet Agia, built at the slopes of Ossa mountain, the tourist resort Agiokambos with the extended sandy beach, the historical village Ambelakia, built at the straits of Tembi and the whole region of Tembi, which is one of the most scenic sites of the world, shall amaze you. Prefecture of Magnesia

The newly built Volos, the capital of the prefecture of Magnisia, is a cosmopolitan town, a commercial port, an industrial region and one of the major towns of the country of Greece, while at the same time it emits a sense of picturesqueness. In addition, Almyros, the second largest town of Magnesia, is also regarded as an important center of the prefecture.

Milies, Hania, Argalasti, Velestino, Zagora, Makrinitsa, Portaria, Tsagarada, Horefto, Afissos, Vizitsa are some of the most beautiful villages of the prefecture of Magnisia, some of them skirmished on a mountain, some of them built at the foot of a hill and some of them situated along a beautiful coast. Trikala prefecture

 

The beautiful county of Trikala is one of the prefecture that make up the Thessaly region of Greece. The capital city of the region is Trikala, which owes it's name to the Nymph Trikki. The river Litheos that flows through the city adds a wonderful setting and charm to Trikala.

 

Trikala is a county with a very interesting history, is considered by many to be the birthplace of the famous doctor Asclipios. After excavations, visitors to the region can see the well preserved mosaics that are found at the site of the old Asklipiio.

 

The city combines the traditional character of the region with the characteristics of a modern city.

This is something that will be immediately obvious to visitors when they pass one of the bridges over the Litheos river, and can head out from the busy modern city, to the old quarters, where one can find a wonderful selection of old shops and traditional tavernas.

 

Located 22km from Trikala is the town of Kalabaka, famous for being home of the unique site of Meteora. These stunning vertical rocks appear as though they are hanging from the sky.

 

The first traces of history in Meteora dates back to 1430 AD, when then first hermits settled here. These unique rock monasteries have been characterised by UNESCO as a unique phenomenon of cultural heritage.

Today at Meteora there are 6 monasteries that welcome visitors from all over the world, allowing them the opportunity to experience and share their admiration for the wooden iconostasis, the beautiful frescoes, the inspiring religious icons and the handwritten gospels and manuscripts that have been safely kept at the museums of the monasteries for centuries.

Meteora is very close the neighbouring county of Karditsa, and visitors to Meteora can easily head over there where they can see the beautiful area of Lake Plastira, and some over charming traditional villages.

 

Trikala is an excellent destination for visitors to Greece, and is a wonderful base from which one can explore the other beautiful counties of Thessaly, as well as providing access to other areas of Greece.

 

There are frequent connections with Athens and Thessaloniki by national bus ( KTEL ) and the railways ( OSE ).

 

Karditsa prefecture

 

Karditsa is one of the four counties that together form the region of Thessaly. Karditsa borders with Trikala on the north and with Larissa on the east. As with many other areas of mainland Greece, Karditsa is an extremely beautiful places, with mountains dominating the landscape.

 

Nature and vegetation thrives in the region, and during the months of spring, an extremely beautiful array of colours and aromas fill the scenery, creating an exceptionally pretty place in which to enjoy peaceful and relaxing holidays.

The capital city of Karditsa shares the same name as the county, and it is the trading and economical centre of the region. One could even go say far as to say that is it the capital of beauty and magic in the region.

 

The traditional villages of the mountainous area of Argithea are surrounded by the beautiful forest of the Agratha mountain. It is in this exquisite part of Karditsa that you will find the stunning Lake Plastira.

This lake region is one of the most beautiful you will anywhere in Greece, and is a place of extreme beauty. Rich in nature and vegetation, the region of Lake Plastira is one that visitors will instantly fall in love with.
